Reducing Wildfire Risk: the BC Gulf Islands approach
In 2026, Salt Spring Island conservation groups teamed up to produce an excellent resource for us folks living in the "Intermix Wildland" zone of this Coastal Temperate Rainforest ecosystem.
The bulk of BC FireSmart research and public education efforts are rightly concentrated in the areas of the southern interior, Cariboo plateau and boreal forest -- where lightning strikes in huge areas of wilderness and mountainous topography make for massive, quickly spreading, intense fires.
We obviously live in a different forested landscape here, where the history of fire is far less frequent and of less intensity (approx. 70 - 100 year intervals; and almost entirely human caused). BUT we do have the dry season where everyone needs to be on high alert. Thankfully most of us are attuned to this!
The 20+ page document webpage link is below, produced with thanks and appreciation by the team at Salt Spring Island Water Preservation Society and the Climate Adaptation Research Lab. It outlines how to reduce fire risk and better understand the ecology of the landscape when managing your property for fire risk . . .
